How can you acquire Fiji citizenship?

Citizenship By City-of-birth

CITIZENSHIP BY BIRTH

Those born in Fiji acquire citizenship unless the parents have diplomatic immunity or neither parent is a Fiji citizen.

 
Citizenship By Descent

CITIZENSHIP BY DESCENT

Those born outside the Fiji Islands to at least one Fiji parent may register for citizenship.

 
Citizenship By Naturalization

CITIZENSHIP BY NATURALIZATION

Those over age 18 may apply for naturalization if they have been lawfully present in Fiji for at least 5 of the 10 years preceding the application.

Renunciation of the original citizenship is not required pursuant to Section 11(2) of the Citizenship of Fiji Decree 2009.

 
Citizenship By Registration

CITIZENSHIP BY REGISTRATION

The following categories of people may apply for citizenship by registration:

  • those born outside the Fiji Islands to at least one Fiji parent;
  • minors adopted by a Fiji citizen;
  • minors born to a parent who became a citizen after the child was born.
 
Citizenship By Marriage

CITIZENSHIP BY MARRIAGE

Those married to a Fiji citizen may apply for citizenship once they have been lawfully present in Fiji for at least 3 of the 5 years preceding the application.
