Dual Citizenship Belize

Belize permits dual citizenship. The Belize Constitution provides that a "citizen of Belize by birth or descent who acquires the citizenship of any other country may, if the laws of the other country so permit and at his option, retain his citizenship of Belize."

How can you acquire Belize citizenship?

Citizenship By City-of-birth

CITIZENSHIP BY BIRTH

Those that are born in Belize and to children and grandchildren of Belize citizens are entitled to citizenship. However, citizenship is not available for those whose parent is a citizen of a country at war with Belize or has immunity from a legal power in Belize.

 
Citizenship By Descent

CITIZENSHIP BY DESCENT

Those who are children or grandchildren of at least one Belize citizen are entitled to citizenship by descent. Citizenship by descent is available through an Application for Registration, which can be obtained from a Belize embassy or consulate. However, the application must be presented in person at the Immigration and Nationality Department in the City of Belmopan.

 
Citizenship By Naturalization

CITIZENSHIP BY NATURALIZATION

Those that have lived in Belize as a permanent resident for at least 5 years may apply for naturalization.

 
Citizenship By Marriage

CITIZENSHIP BY MARRIAGE

Those that marry someone who is a citizen of Belize may apply for citizenship by marriage. The foreign spouse must have lived in Belize for 1 year before citizenship could be acquired in this way. A foreigner who marries a Belizean automatically gains residence status.
