Dual Citizenship Romania

Romanian citizenship is based upon the principle of jus sanguinis (right of blood). This means that citizenship is determined by the citizenship of the person's ancestors.

Romania is a member of the European Union, which means that a Romanian citizen may freely travel and reside in any of the countries that are a part of the EU.

How can you acquire Romanian citizenship?

Citizenship By City-of-birth

CITIZENSHIP BY BIRTH

Those born to at least one Romanian parent acquire citizenship at birth, regardless of the place of birth.

Those found on Romanian territory is also granted citizenship if the parents are unknown.

 
Citizenship By Naturalization

CITIZENSHIP BY NATURALIZATION

Those meeting at least one of the following requirements may apply for citizenship by naturalization:

  • Born in Romania and currently reside there;
  • Have resided in Romania for at least 8 years;
  • Married to a Romanian citizen for at least 5 years.

Applicants must be age 18 or older and have a good understanding of the Romanian language and culture.

 
Citizenship By Marriage

CITIZENSHIP BY MARRIAGE

Those who are married to a Romanian spouse for at least 5 years may apply for Romanian citizenship.

 
Citizenship By Adoption

CITIZENSHIP BY ADOPTION

Those adopted by at least one Romanian foster parent are eligible for Romanian citizenship. If the child is age 14 or the older, the child's consent is required.
